Vastu Shastra is also known as Shilpa Shastra or Vastu Vidya. References to Vastu and the deities that reside in our homes can be found in the Rigveda and Atharvaveda. It is said that Rishi Parashara learned the knowledge of Vastu Shastra from Lord Shiva, then passed it on to Brihadratha, who taught it to Vishwakarma. Vishwakarma, the divine architect, then shared it with humanity for the welfare of the world.
In the Vedas, prayers have been made to Lord Vishnu and Agni to bless our homes with wealth and prosperity. Vastu is an ancient science, mentioned in texts like the Agni Purana, Matsya Purana, Narada Purana, and many others. Just like Ayurveda and Astrology, Vastu Shastra also originates from the Vedas.
According to the Matsya Purana, Vastu Purush was born from the sweat of Lord Shiva. When he fell on the earth face down, the gods held him down from all directions and settled upon him. That is why, in any space where deities are worshipped, Vastu Purush is worshipped first—without him, any puja is considered incomplete.
Whenever we build a new home, renovate an old one, or notice persistent unrest in the house, it is essential to perform Vastu Puja. Signs like constant fights, strange behavior from animals (dogs, cats, cows, horses), persistent nesting of pigeons, large beehives, or continuous mishaps in the house may indicate Vastu dosh (imbalances).
If your home has Vastu defects, it's important to rectify them as soon as possible. If you are buying or renting a property—be it residential or commercial—ensure a Vastu check is done first.
Vastu is also deeply connected with your birth chart. Just as directions impact Vastu, planets influence directions. This is why a house facing the same direction can be extremely auspicious for one person and inauspicious for another.
Elements like nearby rivers, roads, trees, or terrain all have an effect on the energy of the space and the people living in it. Sometimes, small corrections can bring big improvements in energy flow. However, it is best to follow Vastu principles while purchasing or entering any new home or business space.
Vastu Shastra is vast and multifaceted. It has several branches such as:
Nagara Vastu (for towns and cities)
Durga Vastu (for forts)
Mandir Vastu (for temples)
Pyaau Vastu (for water shelters)
Each has its own set of rules and, when followed, ensures prosperity and well-being.
Even the shape of the land (plot) affects the kind of energy it carries. Every shape carries its own frequency and result. If you're buying land to build your home, be mindful of the shape and orientation.
That’s all for today.
