Friends, you all must have heard of astrology. Many people believe that astrologers perform miracles. And yes, astrology does seem miraculous — not in a magical way, but because it can reveal things about us that even we don’t know. Certain combinations of planets and constellations in our birth chart reflect patterns that a skilled astrologer can interpret. When they explain these to us, we’re often surprised and feel it’s nothing short of a miracle.
But in truth, our ancient sages gave us the science of astrology not just to predict events but to guide our conduct and help maintain harmony in society. Every planet is connected to one of our relatives or relationships in life. For example:
The Sun represents our father
The Moon is related to the mother
Mars represents brothers and friends
Mercury relates to sisters, aunts (bua)
Jupiter signifies teachers and elder siblings
Venus is connected to a man’s wife
Saturn relates to workers or those who serve us
Rahu symbolizes the paternal side of the family
Ketu is connected to the maternal side
So, if a planet is weak or afflicted in someone's chart, their relationship with the relative that planet represents may also suffer. For instance, if the Sun is weak or negatively placed, the person may have a strained relationship with their father or face problems associated with Sun-related matters. The severity or specifics depend on various combinations in the birth chart, and based on those, remedies are suggested.
In astrology, the first step is identifying which planet is causing struggles in one’s life — and whether these struggles are also linked to karma from past lives. When we knowingly harm or wrong someone, that act (karma) doesn’t go unpunished. Its consequences can carry over into future lives. That’s why our sages taught us to live virtuously and carry out our duties with sincerity.
Astrology helps us live our lives more consciously. Sadly, today, the essence of astrology is often misunderstood or misused. But even in this age of Kaliyug, the beauty is that if we pray or chant with a pure heart — even for just 24 minutes (two ghadis) — we can begin to reduce the negative effects of afflicted planets.
If a planet is meant to bring us suffering — be it through health, finances, or relationships — we can reduce that suffering by offering sincere prayer, performing relevant rituals, or asking for forgiveness. When we take even a small amount of discomfort upon ourselves through spiritual discipline, it reflects humility. And the planet, instead of punishing us, begins to ease up. This is the karmic balance.
So, if you’re facing difficulties in your life — especially those related to strained relationships — you should first understand that the root cause might lie within you or your own karmic patterns. The best way forward is to honor all your relationships, as each one is governed by a planet. Offer them respect, and align your actions with dharma (righteous conduct).
Just take out two ghadis (24 minutes) a day for prayer, meditation, or chanting — in your own way, according to your beliefs. This is a simple and direct way to live a balanced and meaningful life.
Remember, the planets always influence our lives. Whether you believe in astrology or not, just as the Sun gives light and heat to everyone, the effect of planetary energy is also universal and constant.
Astrology teaches us how to deal with these energies — what problems can arise from which planet, what karmic debts are shown in our birth chart, and what mistakes are unforgivable. Through astrology, we not only understand our past and present, but we also prepare for the future.
I’ll continue to share more about each planet in the upcoming sessions.
That’s all for today.
